“Hello, is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me. Is there anyone at home?”

Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb

I love this song. Not just because of the spartan drum beat, the haunting guitars and the ethereal vocals. I love this song because it’s a musical representation of my childhood. It speaks of a drifting consciousness, the hazy realization that life on the outside doesn’t match life on the inside. I was in there but no one was home.

As a child, I truly believed life could be different. I thought, as all kids do, that one day my dreams would magically come true and I would be happy. Confident. Successful.

Be careful what you wish for.

One unexpected lesson I learned is that the goals we shoot for can actually frustrate our quest for happiness. For over 20 years, I was a real go getter. I dedicated myself to the corporate rat race, excelling in an accountancy career. I did the ‘female’ thing of working ten times harder than was strictly necessary. Earned the pay check. Got promoted. Won the accolades.

And never shook the nagging question, “Is this really it?”

Eventually, it became obvious that I was living a life that didn’t feel right. My work no longer inspired me and I was spending far too little time on the things I was really passionate about: travel, fitness, and adventure. I deserved better—my monochrome life wasn’t cutting it! So I confronted my dreams, held myself accountable for achieving them, and eventually severed ties with that misdirected life.
